Sr Data Consultant - Insurance

Job Purpose:

Provides leadership to all activities related to establishing and maintaining NCCI Data Reporting Compliance programs, rules, industry communications, and external examination of NCCI’s data reporting systems and processes. Facilitates data reporting issue escalation to carrier executives and state regulators and provide expert level consultation and training to these external stakeholders. The position presents to and collaborates with department heads in the achievement of Data Resources strategic objectives.


Major Duties:

Performs expert analysis of workers compensation insurance data to identify compliance concerns, and implements improvements


Provides thought leadership to issues related to the design and interpretation of data reporting rules, filings, state regulations, and external examinations.


Acts as an expert resource cross-divisionally and externally with carrier executive and regulators.


Advises management on strategy for data quality, data quality systems, and data usage issues, including assistance in prioritization.


Leads decisions on data reporting rules that impact data quality or data usage.


Required Education, Experience, and Skills:

Bachelor’s Degree and 8 years insurance data experience; analyzing data and developing deliverables for internal/external users. This includes hands-on technical experience as a business project lead and primary subject-matter-expert.


Five years experience that demonstrates the ability to oversee long-term data initiatives with broad impact, developing complex project plans and work processes; designing, and delegating technical data tasks, and performing quality assurance using own technical expertise; being viewed within company as key individual overseeing all the facets of high-impact work processes.


In lieu of a degree, 12 years insurance data experience; analyzing data and developing deliverables for internal/external users. This includes hands-on technical experience as a business project lead and primary subject-matter-expert.This experience includes at least 5 years experience overseeing long-term data initiatives with broad impact, developing complex project plans and work processes; designing, and delegating technical data tasks, and performing quality assurance using own technical expertise; being viewed within company as key individual overseeing all the facets of high-impact work processes

  • Extensive knowledge of the workers compensation system from both a data collection organization and insurance company perspective

  • Subject Matter Expert in more multiple workers compensation data areas including: premium audit, exposure development and reporting, claims, financial, and/or medical

  • Extensive knowledge of workers compensation data quality issues, their potential causes and impacts on data usage

  • Experience leading large/high profile strategic projects reporting to higher-level management and/or executives and working with minimal oversight to deliver on high-level strategic direction

  • Ability to lead staff across multiple departments that are not direct reports and without management authority

  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to assemble and clearly explain analyses, proposals and conclusions as appropriate for internal or external audiences

  • Experience presenting in industry meetings with the ability to handle expert questions and participate in workgroup discussions from own expertise

Preferred Education, Experience, and Skills:

Any certification or professional designation from:The Institutes, Insurance Data Management Association (IDMA), The American Society of Workers Comp Professionals (AMCOMP).Actuarial exams also a plus.
