Insurance Analyst - Assigned Risk

Job Purpose:
Reviews residual market workers compensation applications for accuracy. Gathers additional information as necessary. Analyzes application and supporting information, determines eligibility, the proper classification, and proper pricing to prevent premium leakage. Applies regulatory rules and regulations in order to issue a binder.  

Responds to customer inquiries online, via e-mail, and over the phone.
Starting base salary: $39,000 (plus a 7% Performance Bonus) 
Must be able to work the shift 11:00 am-8:00 pm; Monday through Friday.
Major Duties:
Reviews and evaluates moderately complex applications to determine acceptability and coverage. Interprets and applies rules and regulations based on online workers compensation manuals (Basic Manual, Scopes Manual, Experience Rating Manual and the Assigned Risk Procedures Manual), WCIP State Pages, data from multiple internal systems, departmental procedures and other resources in order to process applications according to basic underwriting criteria, properly price the risk (computation of premium and collection of deposit premium) according to residual market guidelines to prevent premium leakage.  Determines whether to accept or modify applications in order to issue binders or decline a risk for coverage.  

Communicates effectively with external customers, such as agents or employers to obtain information needed to accurately process the application, apply appropriate pricing Plans, and resolve customer issues (change in class codes, application of experience modifier, etc.).  Uses applicable resources and applies judgment when resolving online edits, fielding phone calls, and analyzing special application handling needs.  

Prioritizes and organizes work in a high volume, quick-paced environment.  Able to multi-task, as well as balance and meet or exceed department metrics on quality, production, timeliness and phone call compliance.  Responsible for achieving annual goals to support the corporate objective of maintaining/expanding Residual Market services.

Using a variety of on-line systems, maintains accurate records of transaction histories and employer information. Interacts with customers via telephone, e-mail, or other systems to assist with online application submission, obtain additional information, clarify information, answer questions (e.g. ownership rulings, experience rating factor, classification, discount programs), and provides explanation and guidance relative to workers compensation plan rules.  Calls can be non-routine and require deviation from standard guidelines and procedures.  

Leads or participates in department projects and initiatives (e.g., research and revise department procedures, participate in process improvement and systems enhancement projects by recommending process and system changes and assisting with testing).  Assists with training (e.g., on the job trainer for new hires and develops and conducts presentations in staff, performance excellence and department meetings).


Required Education, Experience, and Skills:
•Associate’s degree and 3 years of experience in an analytical or customer service position in industries such as insurance, finance, banking, or similar industries with transferable skills (Candidates may qualify with a higher degree in lieu of experience).  
•Ability to perform independent research using online workers compensation manuals, databases and other resources in order to properly classify, price and process applications.
•Strong analytical, interpersonal, problem-solving, and decision-making skills. 
•Ability to independently handle multiple tasks in order to meet or exceed department metrics on quality, production, timeliness and phone compliance. 
•Ability to make independent decisions where the process steps are not clearly defined or the work falls outside the standard procedures.  
•Strong organizational, research, computer, and multi tasking skills required. 
•Ability to work independently, as well as within a team environment.  
•Ability to follow procedures while possessing and applying excellent judgment.
•Excellent written and verbal communication skills.  
•Excellent listening and probing skills with the ability to interpret and clarify information being provided by customers.  
•Ability to take on work outside comfort zone to develop skills for future assignments.

Preferred Education, Experience, and Skills:
•Bachelor’s degree
•General Understanding of worker’s compensation insurance or insurance industry experience
•Industry specific coursework or industry designations such as AIS, AU or CPCU
